Grand Army Plaza Unified Design Interactive Map

NYC DOT has decided to pursue Option B: Unified Plan for the redesign of Grand Army Plaza. This plan is complex and would eliminate the “roundabout” design to create a pedestrian connection between the Grand Army Plaza arch and Prospect Park.

We created this interactive map in order to better understand the traffic flow around the plaza and have updated it with the newly released map. Click on any of the route buttons to view the travel routes in each direction. This is a volunteer made project and we welcome any feedback or needed edits.

A few notes:

  • The DOT has announced that it selected the bus island design for Flatbush Avenue between GAP and Livinston. This will lead to one car travel lane in each direction.
    • It is unclear where the merge to a single lane will occur but for now it is indicated after passing Plaza Street.
    • It is unclear how the bus lane on the north side of GAP will cross from the right to left side to enter the protected bus lane on Flatbush.
    • The second segment of the bus redesign called for continuing the protected bus lane to the south side of Flatbush Avenue. It is unclear how the protected bus lane will be configured within this design to connect both sides of Flatbush Avenue.
  • DOT has added a left turn lane from Vanderbilt Avenue into the Plaza (thanks for the feedback) from it’s previous design. The alternate route through Plaza Street was kept in the event drivers may chose this alternate option if traffic is severe as there will only be one lane to access both Flatbush and Eastern Parkway from Vanderbilt.

Taken from the DOT’s October 2025 presentation to CB6 of the Flatbush Bus Redesign, it appears the protected bus lane will begin before Vanderbilt Ave. The bus lane implementation in the new proposed design has not been provided in the current map.

A few notes:

  • It appears that the Flatbush Avenue bus redesign will also occur which will lower the traffic lanes on Flatbush to one lane is each direction. It is unclear where in this connection the merge will occur. The interactive map is illustrating this merge going westbound after passing Plaza Street.
  • There does not appear to be a left turn lane when traveling southbound from Vanderbilt Avenue and the route is reflecting this feature.
DOT will be hosting community outreach through April about their plan to modify Grand Army Plaza by unifying the arch and park entrance. This is a major connection point for many Brooklyn neighborhoods. Please show up and make your voice heard!

An online survey is open until May 31st.

There is NO accommodation for people on plaza street west to access Eastern Parkway.

It appears that Plaza Street East and Plaza Street West will have a lot of redirected traffic from Eastern Parkway and Union Street. Currently both of these streets are local streets. More traffic ; More pollution. The original concept was for both the east and west berms to screen residential buildings from traffic noise and sight. Pollution was not an issue when berm concept was originally conceived.

Seems that Plaza East will contonue to be closed to traffic from flatbush and Eastern and Plaza St W should have less traffic because no one can go through to Eastern Parkway or Flatbush from there.

The traffic flow and its effect on local streets like Plaza St East and Plaza St West has not been thought through. I live on Plaza St East between Vanderbilt and Flatbush, and I am very concerned about the impact on our block. As proposed, traffic on almost all routes involving Vanderbilt Ave, and some other routes, will be forced to use Plaza Street E. The routes include:
    Vanderbilt – Flatbush Northbound
    Vanderbilt- Flatbush Southbound
    Vanderbilt – Union Southbound
    Vanderbilt – EPW Eastbound
    Union – Flatbush Northbound

The increased traffic, noise and pollution will make the block unlivable. I would like to record my strong opposition to this proposal for that reason.
